UNITY - by Lian Samte | TRVM | Chief Moderator Desk

Unity is elusive for us. Why? Is it because we don’t understand the real implication of unity or the
accompanying complications whenever we try to achieve one?

Unity is elusive because we need not strive for it. It runs in our blood and we don’t know it. Ours is not even unity in diversity. There is nothing that can separate us except a few variations in dialectic pronunciations and accents that are natural products of the geological environment in which we are born and brought up. It is difficult to unite us because we are already one and we are trying toaccomplish what is already there. You cannot invent a television because it is already there. Likewise, you cannot achieve unity when it is already there. We make up differences and artificial barriers that are rather mental blocks and try to scale these creations of our own. For you, there’s no foe more powerful than you yourself.

Take, for example, the Guite family that is presumed to be prime royal family in our tribal confraternity. It exists in many linguistic groups of the communities. Or take Singson who are supposedly one of thefirst Christians among us. There are hundreds, thousands of them, who speak Hmar and Thadou dialects. How can these sub-tribes or clans strive for unity when they are already one and the same?

If our politics divides us, our politics is wrong. If our society divides us, our society is wrong. If our religion or churches divide us, then, even those may have to be seen in a whole new light. Anything that divides a people and stand in the way of their unity is anathema.

Until and unless these sharp dividing lines are smoothed, real tribal unity will never come to be. Youridentity runs deeper than your language, dialect, religion and politics. Only when you rise above the petty layers of socio-cultural, political and minor dialectic variations, then you will arrive at the at the paradisiacal plane of unity and harmony.
