PRESS INVITE
Lamka, August 20, 2016
Dear Sir/Ma’am,
On August 31, 2015, the Manipur Assembly passed three anti-tribal bills, namely, the Protection of Manipur People Bill, 2015; the Manipur Land Revenue & Land Reforms (Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2015; and the Manipur Shops & Establishments (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015.
The brutal acts of violence meted out by the State Armed Forces on innocent tribal youths resulted in the loss of nine tribal lives and maimed more than 50 people. Condemning such callous deeds, the Joint Action Committee Against Anti-Tribal Bills (JAC) reaffirms to ensure justice for the nine martyrs and the demand for a separate administration for the indigenous tribals in Manipur.
August 31, 2016 will be observed as ‘Tribal Unity Day’ across all the tribal districts of Manipur. As a run up to this day, starting from August 26, the JAC will organize a week- long agitation: public meetings, torch rallies, traditional gun salutes and various other forms of protests in Lamka, the epicentre of the ongoing Tribal Movement in Manipur.
On the event of the first and historic ‘Tribal Unity Day,’ the JAC also plans to hold a press conference where in the Committee will make official declarations on the future course of action as the tribals in Manipur enter a new phase in the Movement.
On the above given occasion, we invite all esteemed media houses to kindly be present at the above mentioned event(s) at Lamka, Manipur to witness, document and disseminate the culmination of the Manipur tribals’ yearlong struggle for their land, rights and identity.
Detailed programme and schedule for the various activities and events will be made available shortly.
